Highland Single Malt, 48%, 70cl — Small Batch of 2 casks, Refill Sherry Butt
Limited edition of 1488 bottles — LMDW Exclusive

Located on the Isle of Mull, the Tobermory distillery was founded in 1798. Renamed Ledaig in 1972 when it reopened after 42 years of closure, it closed again in 1975, before reopening under the name Tobermory in 1989. It produces two single malts, one unpeated, Tobermory, and the other peated (30-40 ppm), Ledaig. To produce the latter, the distillery sources barley from the Port Ellen maltings. This particularly generous version delivers one after the other, in complete disarray and without holding back at all, all of the ingredients that sculpt its extreme personality. Ledaig to the tips of its toes, it prefers to take a route off the beaten path to reach its destination.

Description

Tasting Notes

Color : Vivid gold.

Nose : Taut, concentrated. Herbaceous notes of white mint and straw intertwine with smoky elements of ash and soot. The initial nose also reveals hints of lemon zest, camphor, ginger root, and hydrocarbons such as diesel and shoe polish. Upon aeration, it takes on a more pastry-like quality while retaining its tanginess, reminiscent of a lime tart. Notably, the aromatic palette progressively gains elegance with floral undertones of lily, iris, infused green tea, fruity nuances of mirabelle plum, and a soft, velvety essence akin to artichoke heart.

Palate : Vibrant, majestic. Highly mineral with chalk and slate, the palate exhibits a juicy pear-like quality alongside a delicate acacia honey sweetness. However, the tasting experience swiftly takes a turn towards an extremely medicinal and vegetal realm, with hints of tiger balm and menthol intertwining with anise and licorice flavors. Saturated with intense smoke, the finish on the palate becomes distinctly empyreumatic, reminiscent of tar and Armenian paper.

Finish : Long, sharp. The opening notes of the finale evoke an image of a peat field adorned with wildflowers such as dandelion, buttercup, and daffodil. Gradually, it evolves, but steadily, towards animalic tones of bacon and leather, intertwined with briny elements of samphire and seaweed. The retro-olfaction is dominated by citrus notes of lemon, grapefruit, hints of white mint, and dark fruits like blackberry and blueberry. As a grand finale, an empty glass beckons you to venture to the seaside, to inhale the bracing sea breeze.

Profile : Smoky, herbaceous.
