PORT ELLEN 42 ans 1981 REFILL SHERRY BUTT Recollection Gordon & Macphail
$16,500.00
Founded in 1825 on the island of Islay, off Scotland’s west coast, by Alexander MacKay, the Port Ellen distillery holds a legendary reputation.
John Ramsay took over the lease in 1836, and the site remained in his family until 1920 before falling silent in 1930.
The distillery reopened in 1967, only to close again in 1983, with its stills dismantled and removed.
Renowned for the subtlety, uniqueness, and rarity of its spirit, Port Ellen’s single malts have long been revered by enthusiasts and collectors.
In 2024, the distillery reopened, but lost masterpieces like this whisky aged in a Gordon & MacPhail cask are a testament to its heritage.
Distilled in 1981, this whisky was matured for 42 years in a refill sherry butt and bottled at 52.5%.
The Recollection #3 range, through a series of meticulously selected bottlings, explores the history of Scotland’s closed distilleries.
Preserved in Gordon & MacPhail’s warehouses, these whiskies reflect a bygone era and a unique chapter of Scotch whisky history.
