MOTHER MESCCIA Pure Single Rum

Mother Mesccia is a white rum conceived by Luca Gargano (Velier), inspired by an idea from H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco to revive Mesccia, a historic Monegasque spirit dating back to the 17th century. Unlike the original mesccia—once a blend of Caribbean rum and European fortified wines—this modern interpretation begins at the source, as a pure white distillate. Made from Cristalline sugarcane grown in Saint-Michel-de-l’Attalaye, Haiti, it represents the foundational “mother” spirit from which future cask-aged Mesccia expressions (in ex-vermouth and ex-Marsala casks) will be born.

This project uniquely bridges Haiti and Monaco. Fermentation and first distillation take place in Haiti, using pure fresh cane juice, indigenous yeasts, and a traditional Müller discontinuous still fired by wood, under the guidance of Michel Sajous. The first distillate is then shipped to Monaco, where a second distillation is carried out in a Khote still at the Principality’s first and only distillery, founded in 2017. This dual-origin process unites Haitian terroir with Monegasque craftsmanship, giving Mother Mesccia its singular identity and setting the stylistic foundation for the revived Mesccia range.
