LAPHROAIG 2013 Aged 10 Years ARTIST #14 Rothes Glen

$415.00

Founded in 1815 by Alexander and Donald Johnston, the Laphroaig distillery doubled its production capacity in 1924.

From 1954 to 1972, it was run by Elizabeth “Bessie” Williamson, during which time three new stills were installed.

It is now owned by the Suntory company. Absolutely magnificent, this particularly sunny version reveals, throughout the tasting, all the olfactory and gustatory ingredients that make Laphroaig an inimitable single malt.

Connoisseurs will especially appreciate a retro-olfaction imbued with the smoke of a Havana cigar floating in an infinitely maritime setting.

Tasting Notes

Colour
: Pale gold.

Nose : Both subtle and powerful. Vegetal (agave, malted barley), lemony, salty, and of course empyreumatic (cinders, fuel), smoky, earthy, rooty (gentian), and peaty. The aromatic palette gradually becomes floral (lily, lily of the valley, white lilac). Upon aeration, mineral scents of bitumen and slate invade the olfactory space.

Palate : Rich, dynamic. A peat that becomes oilier than the nose suggested initially takes center stage in the taste experience. Very soon afterward, flavors of lavender honey, fresh walnut, and dark chocolate follow. Then, much like the nose, the palate becomes increasingly empyreumatic and ashy.

Finish : Long, distinguished. Fermentative (barley porridge, peaty wort), the finish takes us to deeply breathe in a marine and iodized air. Then, pierced by the rays of a brilliant sun, it elevates us, evoking the chalky character of a cliff.
