CAPERDONICH Aged 20 Years ARTIST 10th Anniversary S.V

$699.00

Speyside Single Malt, 55.8%, 70cl — Single Cask # 29488, Hogshead Limited edition of 251 bottles — LMDW Exclusive

Founded in 1898, the year of the Pattison brothers’ scandal which brought an end to one of the most euphoric periods in Scottish whisky history, Caperdonich did not actually begin producing its whisky until the mid-1960s, after it had become the property of Chivas Brothers. Its founder, the owner of the Glen Grant distillery, named it Glen Grant #2, a name it kept until 1965. An important component of the Chivas Regal blend, Caperdonich has never been the subject of a specific official bottling to date.

Founded in 1897, the Caperdonich distillery was closed five years later. It was re-opened in 1965 under the name Glen Grant #2, and dismantled in 2002, and demolished in 2010. Although extremely confidential, this single malt enjoys a very high reputation among connoisseurs. After the sensational Caperdonich 1966 sherry cask bottled in the late 1990s by Signatory Vintage and the no less remarkable 1972 vintage “from Huntly to Paris”, aged in bourbon barrels and selected by La Maison du Whisky from Duncan Taylor, this version joins the very exclusive circle of the best Caperdonich. Absolutely remarkable, it is one of the flagship bottlings of our Artist range, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year.

Tasting Notes

Colour : Deep burnished gold

Nose : Delicate, refined. Very elongated, the first nose is a subtle blend of citrus (lemon, grapefruit), vanilla, wildflowers (dandelion, buttercup), ripe fruits (pear, apple) and spices (black pepper). On airing, the spices turn into chili peppers (Cayenne) while plums, pineapples and bananas complete the fruit basket of the first nose. Then, malted barley covers the aroma palette with resinous notes (pine, juniper). It is noteworthy that the whole is very cohesive.

Palate : Clean, lively. The same citrus as on the nose provide a lot of liveliness on the palate, while new fruits (peach, yellow melon) appear. In the middle of the palate, the malted barley represents a wonderful herbal transition. The aftertaste is slightly medicinal (balm), vanilla and floral (lily, iris). Over time, a magnificent chocolate bitterness highlights the mouthwatering characteristics of the taste palette.

Finish : long, full-bodied. In the beginning of the finish, noble spices (cinnamon, ginger, cumin) precede exotic flavors (persimmon, guava), honeyed (acacia) and herbal (straw, flax). Refreshing, the very end of the palate is menthol and in turn medicinal (tiger balm). Much later, coconut milk, vanilla and lavender honey bring a lot of sweetness to the aftertaste. The empty glass is both malty (barley porridge), powdery (rice), fruity (Williams pear) and slightly animal (bacon).

Profile : Elongated, fruity.
