Established in the eponymous town on the coast of Loch Indaal, Bowmore, founded in 1779, is the oldest distillery on the island of Islay. Warehouse No. 1 has greatly contributed to its reputation both for the quality of the barrels it contains and for its exceptional location. It is in fact located below sea level, with the sea wall serving as a wall. The distillery has also been known for its moderately peated bottlings and for its special barrel finishes, which have earned it many accolades. Still operating today in accordance with tradition, its barley is partially malted on site.
Distilled on a very cold day in December 1961, and then stored in two bourbon hogshead casks, this 50-year-old Bowmore has spent half a century maturing in the legendary No. 1 cellar of the Bowmore distillery.
Only 200 bottles of this exceptional whisky remains, of which 50 bottles has been unveiled each year between 2013 and 2016.
Bowmore 1961 is the celebration of the unique know-how, as well as the talented men who participated in the development of this whisky, on a very cold wintry day on the Isle of Islay.
