BENROMACH 2003 Aged 20 Years ARTIST #14 Benromach

$595.00

Reviving tradition, the owners of the Benromach distillery, the trading house Gordon & MacPhail, produce an “old style” single malt using slightly peated barley (12 ppm), a common practice in Speyside until the 1960s.

The more heavily peated versions, called “Peat Smoke,” boast a phenol content of 67 ppm. This version perfectly illustrates the Benromach style, not only smoky but also remarkably saline and iodine-rich. In addition, the freshly herbaceous aroma profile is impressively long, tracing a line that is at once mineral, medicinal, and spicy.

Tasting Notes

Colour
: Bright gold.

Nose : Fresh, distinguished. Initially, medicinal, saline, and earthy peat scents fill the olfactory space. Upon aeration, essential oil aromas (savory, rosemary, chamomile), cut hay, and acacia honey make a lively entrance.

Palate : Rich, dynamic. Sunny, the flavor profile is smoothly vanilla-laced and nobly spiced (saffron, cardamom). Then, a generous layer of peat carves a deep furrow, from which maritime plants (glasswort, sea plantain), gentian root, and mineral flavors (slate) emerge.

Finish : Long, slender. Becoming more fermentative (wort, barley mash), the tasting continues, revealing delightful flavors of green walnut, fennel, and celery. In the retro-olfaction, heady notes of iris and green licorice perfume emerge.
