The Beenleigh distillery was founded in 1884 and is the oldest active rum distillery in Australia. Located in Queensland, on the northeast coast of the country, it is situated in an area known for its sugarcane plantations. Beenleigh’s history is intertwined with the heritage of Australian rum, notably as a historic supplier to the British Royal Navy. Today, it is one of the few remaining traditional distilleries in the world with limited presence in European markets. Beenleigh produces its rums using molasses and local water. It is a “Single Blended Rum,” crafted using an original and “inverted” technique: first distillation takes place in a column still, followed by pot still distillation. This pot still, known as “The Old Copper,” is similar to those used in Demerara. The rums are then aged in large wooden vats and former bourbon barrels. In addition to their official releases, Beenleigh collaborated with La Maison & Velier for two releases in 2021. This new reference is truly unique in the landscape of Australian rum. The distillery has two aging warehouses: one located near the distillery and another in the southern part of the country, in Renmark in the Barossa Valley, a semi-desert environment. This 2013 vintage was aged for 10 years in ex-bourbon casks in the tropical climate of the Beenleigh warehouse, with a total angel’s share of over 25%, and bottled at a high strength of 59%.
