OLD PULTENEY 17 ans 2004 Conquête

$300.00

Quantity limited to 1 bottle.

Located in the extreme Northeast of Scotland, established in the port of Wick since 1826, the Pulteney distillery has built its history through maritime trade. In the middle of the 19th century, the city of Wick had one of the most active fishing ports in Europe. Accessible only by sea, it quickly gained a strong reputation for its silver barrels (herring) and gold (whisky) that left the port to be exported throughout Europe. The aging conditions due to its proximity to the sea give the whisky a unique style, rich and gourmet with a saline and iodine character.

As is often the case with Old Pulteney, behind a surprising ease of access, this version shows a strength of character and an extraordinary power of expression. Remarkably generous, it embodies the saline, almost iodine, slightly peaty, medicinal and at the same time abundantly fruity and freshly herbaceous style of this “coastal” single malt, particularly appreciated by Islay enthusiasts.

Tasting Notes

Nose
: Fine, fresh. Remarkably saline, the first nose is at the same time medicinal (balm), peppery, vanilla and herbaceous (sage, chamomile). On airing, a very slight note of peat and smoke is accompanied by fresh fruits (pear, mirabelle), freshly cut grass, and juniper berries. The aromatic palette has gained complexity and depth.

Palate : Lively, powerful. Creamy (coconut), vanilla, and powdered (ginger), the attack on the palate has a lot of volume. In the mid-palate, acacia honey and salted butter caramel provide a lot of consistency to the taste palette. The aftertaste reveals new spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, clove). Gradually, barley grains spread all around the palate.

Finish : Long, elegant. With a remarkable freshness (lucerne, mint), the beginning of the finish is also particularly fruity (pear, orange, greengage) and vanilla (flan). The very end of the mouth has exotic (pineapple, banana) and finely chocolate-like tones. The retro-olfaction invites us to enjoy delicious courgette flower fritters. The empty glass is spicy (ginger), floral (iris, lily of the valley) and toasted (coffee).
