Aged between Nine Leaves’ contrasting maturation environments — a seasonal warehouse with dramatic temperature swings and a cool, high-humidity former mine reminiscent of a Scottish dunnage cellar — this singular small batch develops remarkable depth and personality. Dense, baroque and vividly expressive, the rum moves far beyond familiar Caribbean styles, revealing an intensely resinous, spicy and mineral profile layered with dark fruits, incense and earthy complexity. A contemplative, almost architectural spirit that rewards slow tasting.

Founded in 2013 in Shiga Prefecture by Yoshiharu Takeuchi, Nine Leaves quickly earned cult status for its artisanal Japanese approach to rum-making, combining ultra-pure water, precise small-batch distillation and Forsyths copper stills. Its experimental ageing philosophy — including mines and dunnage-style maturation — shaped uniquely textured, terroir-driven rums. Following the distillery’s closure, remaining bottlings have become highly collectible expressions of modern Japanese craft rum.
