To commemorate what would have been his centenary in 2019, Gordon & MacPhail is proud to present this second installment, the legacy of Mr. George Urquhart. “Mr. George,” as he was affectionately called by those who knew him best, was Mr. George Urquhart, the second generation of the family that owns Gordon & MacPhail. He joined the company in 1933 and began his career alongside his father, John, the sole owner of the business since 1915, after the retirement of John Alexander MacPhail and the death of James Gordon. Over the years, “Mr. George” developed a deep knowledge of Scottish whisky, particularly the unique interaction that occurs over time between the spirit and the cask. He played a pivotal role in the success of Scottish whisky by championing single malt at a time when blends were the norm. His philosophy and legacy live on today as Gordon & MacPhail continues to create a unique depth and breadth of rare single malt Scotch whiskies that are found nowhere else in the world. Distilled in 1957, this single malt from Glen Grant was aged by Gordon & MacPhail in a specially designed first-fill sherry cask for the occasion. This perfect pairing offers the whisky delicious notes of fruitcake, candied citrus, Morello cherry, and forest fruits. This whisky is a wonderful example of how careful maturation combines with the character of the distillery to produce a unique single malt of rare age and exceptional quality.
