This FLAG SERIES 8 Year Old 2016 Thailand expression showcases the aromatic singularity of Thai rum, shaped by the country’s hot, humid climate and centuries-old sugarcane cultivation. Distilled in a column still, it matured for four years under tropical ageing before continuing its evolution under continental conditions. The result is a spirit that blends intensity with restraint, opening with bold, free-spirited energy before revealing an unexpectedly delicate and refined heart. Notes of rose petal and vibrant red fruits (strawberry, raspberry, redcurrant) linger long after the tasting, charting a flavour journey that feels both adventurous and deeply rooted.

Thailand’s rum heritage is tied to its long history of sugarcane agriculture. Although the nation’s first sugar refinery was established in 1937, sugarcane has been cultivated since with 14th century, with Thailand now standing among the world’s leading cane producers and exporters. This backdrop of agricultural expertise, combined with tropical ageing and precise distillation, gives rise to a rum that moves beyond established categories, offering an invitation to explore a new aromatic frontier shaped by climate, culture, and craft.

Description

Colour: orangey copper.

Nose: rich and unctuous. Opening on a fine rancio character (apricot kernel, beeswax), the aromatic profile gradually becomes chocolatey, jammy (prune), and exotically fruited (roasted mango, guava). With aeration, notes of flamb?ed banana and rum baba introduce a subtle empyreumatic nuance.

Palate: clean and vibrant. Both herbaceous (fresh sugarcane) and smooth (warm cane sugar), the flavour profile unfolds with particularly juicy citrus notes (blood orange). Growing increasingly indulgent, it invites the taster towards the flavours of a beautifully caramelised apricot tart.

Finish: long and layered. Marked by walnut husk notes that underline a finely controlled maturation, the finish carries the palate into nobly spiced territory (cinnamon, nutmeg, cumin, clove). Powdery (cocoa) and delicately liquorice-like, the retro-olfaction oscillates between candied ginger, dried fruits (fig, date), and a bright, zesty marmalade note.
