This single malt evokes the relentless erosion of Islay’s rocky cliffs, a metaphor for its timeless, old-fashioned charm. Here, peat smoke recedes into the background, allowing coastal character and salt-kissed ripe fruit to take centre stage. The profile recalls maritime winds and brine-saturated air more than bonfire smoke, reflecting a style where smoke and peat are present but beautifully integrated, enhancing rather than dominating the whisky’s expressive, sea-washed nature.
Caol Ila Distillery sits on the rugged eastern coast of Islay, Scotland, overlooking the Sound of Islay and producing one of the island’s most distinctive single malts since 1846. Known for its oily, peaty and marine-inflected spirit, Caol Ila combines smoky malted barley with sea-air salinity and vegetal nuance, yet remains lighter and more refined than many of its Islay neighbours. A key source of peated malt for blends such as Johnnie Walker, Caol Ila also shines as a single malt, with official releases and superb independent bottlings from Gordon & MacPhail, Signatory Vintage and others highlighting its versatility.
