THE DARK SIDE OF THE M 2005 Aged 20 Years ARTIST #15 The Dark Side Of The Moon

$600.00

Created in 2011, ARTIST by La Maison du Whisky is LMDW’s flagship series dedicated to remarkable single casks selected for their expressive, terroir-driven character, paired with contemporary artworks chosen to mirror or contrast the whisky’s identity. Over the years, ARTIST has evolved into a true gallery in bottle form: an annual expression of style, ageing, culture and aesthetics.

ARTIST #15, the fifteenth edition of this emblematic range and released under the ItinĂ©raires catalogue, is divided into two thematic chapters: Something in the Water, inspired by the magic of Islay and paying tribute to the island’s historic distilleries; and The Dark Side of the Moon, which explores the world of sherry cask maturation from Oloroso to Pedro XimĂ©nez.

Among the selections in ARTIST #15, The Dark Side of the “M” is a 2005 distillation that stands out for its poised elegance and expressive maturity. Crafted in one of Speyside’s most iconic distilleries (founded in 1824), it reflects a region known for its complexity, structure and refined aromatic depth.

Matured for two decades in a first-fill sherry butt, The Dark Side of the “M” offers a noble palette of aromas and flavours. A whisky of contrasts, it transitions effortlessly from luminous florals (mimosa, iris) to rich fruit tones that irresistibly recall the finest Calvados from the Pays d’Auge. Generous, sculpted and beautifully expressive, it is a standout example of Speyside sherry maturation at its most evocative.

Description

Tasting Notes

Colour: Old gold with coppery highlights

Nose: Delicate and complex. Magnificent aromas of lemon, rancio (fresh orange), apricot and malt gradually shift toward vanilla, buttery tones and caramelised toffee. With aeration, the profile becomes spicer (ginger, nutmeg) and gently herbaceous (pipe tobacco)

Palate: Lively and elegant. Honeyed notes (linden) mingle with juicy apple and pear, followed by candied lemon and noble spices such as cardamom. As it opens, the whisky becomes increasingly indulgent, evoking Calisson d’Aix (a soft Provençal confection made from almonds and candied fruit) and BĂªtises de Cambrai (traditional mint-caramel sweets from Northern France). Subtly liquorice-like and lightly oily, the palate expands into resinous pine and roasted coffee undertones

Finish: Elegant and full-bodied. A natural return to malted barley is joined by earthy touches of gentian and bright grated ginger. The citrus notes of the nose reappear before yielding to chocolatey and toasted rusk tones. Both shadowy and luminous, the reto-nasal impression evokes the warmth and colour of early autumn
