MHOBA Umganu Brandy cask New Vibrations

$188.00

Derived from fermentations lasting up to three weeks, the rums crafted by Robert Greaves, who founded the Mhoba distillery in 2011, are rich in esters.

With great freshness of expression and extraordinary power, this version named Umganu (fruit of the marula in Siswati, similar to the plum) aged entirely in a cask that previously contained South African brandy undeniably evokes a superb mezcal.

The lingering notes of agave, lemon, earth, almost peat that emanate long after the glass is emptied testify to its character.

Tasting Notes

Colour
: Bright gold.

Nose : Rich, heady. A blend of vanilla, lime, jasmine, warm sugarcane, anise, and star anise; the initial nose is impressively voluptuous. Upon aeration, aromas of white flowers (lilac, lily of the valley), green walnuts, and freshly cut grass perfume the air.

Palate : Lively, slender. Verdant (green mint, verbena) and aniseed, the mouthfeel is medicinal (mustard plaster) and lemony. Mid-palate, the distillate, both spicy (ginger, cloves), licorice-like, and honeyed (acacia), invigorates the palate.

Finish : Long, solar. The beginning of the finish showcases significant minerality (slate, schist). Gradually, flavors of lime, lemon balm, and fresh walnut refresh a milky (agave) and resinous (sugarcane fiber, gentian root) aftertaste.
