In the aftermath of World War II, the island of Cuba housed 69 distilleries, including Bacardi (founded in 1862), Mathusalem (1872), and La Vizcaya (1878), where Ron Havana Club was produced.

On October 13, 1960, the nineteen remaining distilleries, along with one hundred and five sugar plantations, were nationalized.
