Brora

Built in 1819 by the Marchioness of Stafford, the Brora distillery is renowned for its peated whisky, reminiscent of the style from the Isle of Islay. Following an unexpected drought on Islay during the summer of 1969, a shortage of peated whisky slowed down the production of blends for many distilleries.

Brora was then chosen to supply struggling distilleries due to the quality of its peated whisky and lower production costs compared to Islay distilleries. In the 1980s, an overproduction situation led to the permanent closure of around thirty Scottish distilleries, including Brora. In 2014, the exceptional release of an official version of 160 bottles of Brora 40 years old at 59.1% ABV offered a rare opportunity to preserve a testament to one of the legendary “lost distilleries.”
