Throughout the 20th century, the distillery endured several long shutdowns before reviving production in the post-war years, particularly during the modernisation drive of the early 1960s. Despite these efforts, Dallas Dhu—then under United Distillers & Vintners—was ultimately closed in 1983 as part of widespread industry rationalisation. The site was later acquired by Historic Scotland in 1986 and reopened in 1988 as a fully preserved distillery museum, offering a rare time capsule of Speyside whisky-making as it once was.
