CHÂTEAU DE CAMPAGNE D’ARMAGNAC 1988 Collection Domino by Marquis de Montesquiou Itinéraires

$300.00

This refined Bas-Armagnac is crafted from Ugni Blanc, a grape variety prized for its bright acidity and aromatic clarity. Distilled and matured in the sandy-loam soils of Bas-Armagnac, it showcases a beautifully expressive rancio—the hallmark of well-aged Armagnac. Over time, complex layers of mango, prune and apricot have developed, giving this bottling a rich yet elegant profile. Balanced and structured, it reflects the depth of old-world distillation tempered by nuanced maturation, inviting both newcomers and connoisseurs into a multi-faceted sensory experience.

Located near Eauze in the historic Gascony region, Château de Campagne d’Armagnac encompasses 90 hectares of vineyards and sits on land with centuries-old viticultural roots. Acquired by Pernod Ricard in 1965 through the Société des Produits d’Armagnac (SPA), the estate underwent significant modernisation in the 1970s with new stills and ageing cellars. After a period of closure, the distillery entered a new era in 2021, when Alexander Stein acquired a majority stake and initiated a comprehensive restoration project. Today, the estate blends tradition and innovation, producing Armagnacs that express the terroir of Bas-Armagnac with clarity, complexity and nuance.

Tasting Notes

Colour: Deep amber with rich copper reflections

Nose: Fine and profound, opening on mature prune, dried apricot, varnish, beeswax, orange zest and toffee. With aeration, tropical notes of mango and persimmon emerge, joined by delicate floral hints of violet and lavender and gentle spices like pepper and cinnamon.

Palate: Both lively and full-bodied, with an initial cocoa-like warmth that evokes roasted coffee and black tea, followed by tangy orange zest. The profile evolves towards rich wooden notes (sandalwood), incense, prune and candied apricot. Tertiary layers reveal dried fruit such as date, hazelnut and walnut.

Finish: Long and silky, merging powdery cocoa and fresh ginger with delicate bitterness (dark chocolate, citrus) and heady florals (iris, geranium). Mineral, sandy and lightly saline undertones support a persistent retro-olfactory synthesis of prune, toasted wood and subtle medicinal character.
