Built in 1824 in the south of Islay island, Port Ellen was the site of many technological experiments that revolutionized the whisky industry in the 20th century. Closed from 1930 to 1969, it became a maltings center in 1973, responsible for supplying all the distilleries on the island with smoked malt barley. Closed in 1983, Port Ellen lost its production license in 1992 and with it, any hope of reproducing it again. In the early 2000s, its buildings, which only consisted of pagodas and aging warehouses, were demolished. If the late 90s and early 2000s were prosperous in single cask versions, barrel-proof bottled by merchants; since 5 years ago its very iodine and smoked malt has become increasingly rare.
