LAPHROAIG 19 ans 1987 Vintage

Due to its phenolic character, Laphroaig is highly regarded by enthusiasts. It’s no surprise then that the distillery owns its own peat bog that can supply it for the next 4,000 years. Laphroaig will never lose its character and therefore its supporters and detractors, because a peated malt cannot be universally liked: even the water drawn from the source of Loch Kilbride is filtered through peat!

From our 2007 collection, this bottling of 1987 vintage Laphroaig was a La Maison du Whisky exclusive. It was made from the blending of six hogshead barrels, producing exactly 1,387 bottles. This version, noticed by the Malts Maniacs, broke with the 2006 version, a 1974 vintage made from two sherry barrels, which has since become a highly sought-after bottle. Thus, twelve months apart, an “old style” version in sherry barrels and a “modern style” version in bourbon barrels were offered to Laphroaig enthusiasts and collectors.

Tasting Notes

Nose
: complex and creamy, with initial notes of flowers and exotic fruits (pineapple, passion fruit), it evolves to peat and ash (soot) before becoming marine (salt, iodine, smoked fish) and spicy (camphor, cinnamon).

Palate : rich and creamy, with smoke and drizzle alongside white flowers and citrus (lemon). It develops on spices (pepper) and red fruits (raspberry, blueberry).

Finish : long and mineral (gunflint, slate), it lingers on the fine acidity of peat and licorice. The dry extracts, once the glass is empty, reveal notes of white pepper, earth and truffle.
