Founded around 1825 by Captain Robert Barclay, the Laird of Ury Glenury distillery was based in Stonehaven in the eastern highlands. A famous figure in the area, Barclay was nicknamed ÔThe Walking CaptainÕ due to his feat of walking 1 000 miles in 1 000 hours for 1 000 guineas (around 1 000 pounds in those times). In 1835 Barclay received special permission from King William IV to add Ô to the name. After Barclay passed away in 1854 the distillery was bought by William Ritchie and run by his descendants until the late 1930 Õ when it was then bought taken over by Train and Macintyre, the UK division of the National Distillers of America Glenury closed for a period during the Second World War due to the restrictions imposed of the use of barley In the mid 60 Õs the distillery was expanded and the capacity doubled, however in the 1980 Õs the distillery became another victim of the downturn in the whisky industry The distillery was closed and the land sold for housing.
