Casks #513 – #518 – Distilled 18/02/1970 – Bottled 01/07/1990
Signatory Vintage, Vintage Collection – Dumpy – Sherry
Bottle N° – 2122 of 3800 bottles
Distilled in February 1970 and bottled in July 1990 by the independent bottler Signatory Vintage, this rare bottle of Glendronach was matured in sherry casks for 20 years. Without a doubt, it was a clear style and signature of this particular distillery even from back then. This bottle, is not one you can spot in regular liquor stores, and you are in luck if you chance upon this on auction sites or specialist shops!
Nose – A glue-like kickoff that is quickly followed by freshly squeezed red fruits (raspberries and blackberries). Not overly sweet, yet possessing a distinctive pleasantness of wood influence. It feels like entering an antique furniture showroom – old varnished wood, wood glue, and waxy. The fruitiness is then accompanied by freshly baked cinnamon buns, raspberry liqueur, red wine, and raisins. Allowed to sit and breathe, it slowly develops a slightly herbal scent of rosemary. To best picture it altogether, a Christmas cake garnished with dried fruits, candied fruits (cherries and berries to be exact), chocolates, a drizzle of cranberry sauce, and some fresh roses served on the side. Such enchanting complexity. Palate – Heavy, rich, surprisingly delicate and drinkable for a 58% abv. Initial hints of oak, dried apricots, vanilla fudge and earl grey tea. Followed by bursts of bitter oranges, candied kumquats and dried ginger. Finish – Long and extremely fruity. The fruitiness becomes more distinct on the lingering aftertaste (apricot, peach, starfruit, grape skin). A classic example of sherry boldness, complimented by an outstanding complexity.
