BENROMACH 9 ans 2011 First Fill Sherry Hogshead Single Cask French Connections

$170.00

Founded in 1898, the Benromach distillery has been put on hold several times (1931 to 1937, 1983 to 1998). Bought in 1993 by the famous family trading house Gordon & MacPhail, it was completely rebuilt and then reopened in 1998 with the desire to produce a Speyside single malt as it was produced in the 1950s, that is say slightly peaty (12 ppm).
Benromach Single Malts are made using a manual method that relies on the know-how of master distillers, and aged exclusively in first-fill barrels. This is also the case here, with this superb Oloroso sherry hogshead cask, filled in 2011.
Perfectly embodying the very malty and slightly peaty style of Benromach, with its lemony, saline and herbaceous notes, this version is unmistakably reminiscent of a fino sherry from a great limestone terroir (albariza).
Others will evoke the oxidative character of a yellow wine from the Jura. Anyway, it’s a very tasty single cask, which brings everything you expect from a sherry cask, with a fine peat to gain even more aromatic depth.

Description

Colour: Deep old gold
Nose: Ample and fine. Initially, malted barley, vanilla, dried fruit (grape, walnut), toffee, various spices (ginger, nutmeg) and iris concrete diffuse a particularly sunny light on the aromatic palette. . Allowed to breathe, a very subtle fruity rancio (apricot, mango, peach) and candied citrus fruits (lemon, grapefruit) highlight the fine influence of the sherry wine. Wonderfully saline, it lingers on with literally bewitching scents of peat, heady flowers (lily, broom) and aromatic plants (chamomile).
Palate: Lively and precise. The attack in the mouth immediately places the sherry at the heart of the tasting. Notes of coffee with milk and salted butter caramel. Then, a fine peat coats the lower part of the palate. On this earthy base are placed fresh fruits (pear, mirabelle plum), exotic fruits (pineapple, banana), cinnamon and curry. The aftertaste is unmistakably medicinal (balm, arnica), spiritual (incense) and finely woody (oak, wax).
Finish: Long and heady. Particularly spicy (Cayenne, Espelette), the start of the finish is of rare concentration. Its powdery character (rice) goes perfectly with the many spices (saffron, cardamom, white pepper) which gradually fill the ambient atmosphere. This nobility of expression is further accentuated by the presence of extremely suggestive chocolate and herbaceous flavors (tobacco, sage). In retro-olfaction, vanilla and almond milk refresh the taste buds. From the empty glass the smells of hot bread, burnt wood and star anise escape.
Profile: Gourmet and spicy.
