AMRUT Peated Port Pipe French Connections LMDW 2021

$230.00

Founded in 1948, a few months after India’s independence, this family-based company based in Bangalore in the south of the country produces a whisky in the traditional Scottish style while claiming its Indian origins. In fact, it uses almost exclusively barley grown in the fertile plains at the foot of the Himalayas. Established at nearly 1000 meters above sea level and subject to a tropical climate, its cellars where mainly bourbon barrels are stored are true aging accelerators.

An LMDW exclusive The peated versions of the single malt produced by the Amrut distillery go very well with aging in a port barrel. Several of them bottled for La Maison du Whisky are testimony to this. The third part of our 2021 Creation Catalog dedicated to the Bangalore distillery, this version doesn’t mince words in imposing its style that is both uncompromising and wonderfully nuanced at the same time. It finds its unity of tone thanks to a subtle play of constant back and forth between peaty, fruity, animal, exotic, medicinal, spicy, and ash-like sequences.

Tasting Notes

Color
: Topaz with greenish reflections.

Nose : Rich, concentrated. On the first nose, the setting is established, an elegant peat and many red and black fruits (raspberry, strawberry, blackberry, blackcurrant) play on an equal footing. Upon aeration, peat, soot, smoke, and animal notes take the upper hand. From then on, change of scenery: licorice, camphor, turmeric, green lemons, and especially malt barley grains enter the scene to give the reply to an increasingly intense smoke.

Palate : Delicate, purified. Overflowing with exoticism (pineapple, banana), the attack on the palate is also milky (latte, cream cheese), herbaceous (alfalfa), licorice, oily, and intensely smoky and peaty. Upon aeration, candied lemons, acacia honey, and verbena evoke an old-fashioned white tiled port. Licorice, terpenic (lava, incense), the finish takes us straight in front of the fireplace (soot, ashes).

Finish : Long, gourmet. At the beginning of the finish, flavors of vanilla flan and tobacco notes coexist in perfect harmony. In reality, over the course of the tasting, the animal (air-dried meat) character of this Amrut has become increasingly marked. In circumference, ripe fruits (pear, apple), citrus fruits (lemon, grapefruit) and green licorice play the indispensable secondary roles in its balance. In the retro-olfaction, malt barley grains, peat, and smoke persist.
