HISTORY

Recognized as the “Father of Japanese whisky”, Nikka Whisky founder Masataka Taketsuru shaped the history of Japanese whisky, with the loving support of his Scottish wife Rita. In 1934, he built his 1st distillery, Yoichi, on the island of Hokkaido.

TRADITION & INNOVATION

Masataka imported the 1st Coffey stills from Scotland, country where he learn and fell in love with whisky, & started distilling Coffey grain whisky. Since 2017, the award winning whiskies company has expanded its signature Coffey range into the world of white spirits.

YOICHI & MIYAGIKYO

There are 2 distilleries behind every Nikka Whisky: the traditional Yoichi & innovative Miyagikyo. These two distilleries produce very different single malts, expressing the unique character of their origins, as their founder had wished.

The influence of the landscape

Masataka believed the environment was a key factor in the crafting of fine whisky. He built two exceptional sites: Miyagikyo distillery in Honshu and the Yoichi distillery in Hokkaido.
YOICHI is located on the coast of Japan’s northernmost island Hokkaido. The distillery is located 50km west of Sapporo city, known for its snow festival and host of the 1972 winter Olympics. Originally, the local peat bogs were the source of Yoichi’s subtle smoky notes, while the sea breeze leaves its imprint on these whiskies of undeniable character.
A stark contrast to Yoichi’s rough coastal conditions, the Miyagi region’s rolling hills and peaceful forests are renowned for providing a very pure air and particularly clean water, which convinced Taketsuru after 3 years of searching. The MIYAGIKYO distillery is built in 1969, in the heart of the natural environment, from which the whiskies draw their softness, their elegance, and purity.

Single Blends

Blended whiskies are a skilful combination of both malt and grain whiskies. Nikka’s two malt distilleries, Yoichi and Miyagikyo, provide the characterful pot still malts, while the Coffey Grain portion distilled from corn gives a smooth edge to the final blend.

Nikka Single Malts

Single malts must come from a single distillery, made from 100% malted barley and be distilled in pot stills. With two distilleries in the north of Japan, Yoichi and Miyagikyo, Nikka Whisky offers two different single malt expressions.

Nikka Pure Malts

Pure malts (or blended malts) are a blend of different single malts.

Bottled under the Taketsuru label, these expressions are a worthy tribute to Nikka’s founder, Masataka Taketsuru, with a smooth, sherry-cask influenced style.

Nikka Coffey whiskies are produced in continuous stills called Coffey stills, named after the inventor, Aenas Coffey. While Nikka is primarily known for its award winning whiskies, the company also has a long history of distilling white spirits for the Japanese domestic market, including gin and vodka. Since 2017, Nikka has developed stunning new gin and vodka expressions based 100% on their Coffey still distillate.
