This week, La Maison du Whisky Singapore is celebrating French distilleries & distillates; and what better way to celebrate than the start of Melon season in France?

The creamy-skinned cantaloupe with green stripes, sometimes covered with a lacy pattern, has dominated French market stalls since the 15th century, when Charles VIII introduced the first plants from Italy.

Some mystical combination of Mediterranean climate and soil means that Cavaillon melon seeds planted elsewhere don’t taste quite the same as the ones grown in France.

Drive through Provence in the summer and you will see melons heaped up at stalls by the side of the road, some so ripe that they are bursting at the seams! A closer look reveals that not all Cavaillon melons look alike: each year a list of varieties, both smooth-skinned and webbed, is approved for the melon de Cavaillon label.

Cavaillon melons belong to a family of fruit called charentais, which is a word commonly used for French cantaloupes. These iconic melons are exported around the world for your pleasure; today, allow us to take you on a little melon journey with some Merlet Melon liqueur inspired cocktails.

Wine growers in Saintonge for over two centuries, the Merlet family installed its first still in 1980; the creation of the Cassis plantation gave birth to the Creme de Cassis, which is where it really all begins for Merlet.

Over 160 years of distillation experience, and a passion that spans five generations… Today, the family owns 100 acres of vineyards in the “Fin Bois” and “Borderie” regions.
