The current Cardhu distillery owes its existence to Elizabeth Cumming. In 1872, she built a new distillery, Cardow, which she expanded in 1887 before selling it in 1893 to John Walker and Sons Ltd.
The distillery’s production capacity was increased, and in 1980, Cardow became Cardhu. Very popular in Europe, its owners decided in the early 2000s to make it a blended malt, which sparked outrage among enthusiasts and purists.
Eventually, Diageo returned to the “original formula,” the Cardhu 12-year-old, and has since expanded the range with a limited edition Cask Strength and, more recently, an 18-year-old.
